What is the Investigation About?

On August 4, 2026, after the market closed, Chemours announced second-quarter results and reduced its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance from $800 million–$900 million to $775 million–$825 million. During the earnings call the following morning, management disclosed that customers had accumulated excess inventory of Opteon refrigerants, leaving the aftermarket channel oversupplied heading into 2026.

Following this news, the price of Chemours stock fell $3.34 per share, or 18.63%, to close at $14.59 per share on August 5, 2026.

Management identified approximately $65 million in aftermarket sales that it indicated should have been allocated to the current year. Following the disclosures, UBS downgraded Chemours from "Buy" to "Neutral" and reduced its price target by 37.9%, citing analysis indicating that Chemours had oversold products in 2025 and likely early 2026. Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan also lowered their price targets.
